Sammy Slims/The Very Knees

When: Thu., Dec. 26, 9 p.m. 2013

The charming, awkward charisma of Sammy Slims surrounds every element of his music. Full of youthful exuberance mixed with mature compositional restraint, Slims' music is fit for a dance party; be it maybe more of an awkward hipster dance party, but a party nonetheless. His indie pop tunes blend slight elements of 80s pop (think Of Montreal meets Human League) and the end result is a brilliantly fun mash-up that goes beyond nostalgic music making. By taking the best elements of maybe more dated music styles, he creates something new, solid and refined like a form of musical alchemy. Most notably, his catchy vocals garnish the music with delightful melodic hooks that make the music stand apart from his contemporaries. Slims delves into a really fresh take on indie pop, especially on tracks like "Cure for Death," which contains incredibly funky guitars and super-fun vocals. (Patrick Stoops)
