Show Me the Prof

For a nonagenarian, ex-Oberlin College teacher runs circles around fellow artists.

A few weeks after his 90th birthday, woodcutter Paul Arnold shows no signs of slowing down, especially for his latest exhibit. The former Oberlin College art professor and Oberlin City Council member handcrafted 25 color woodcuts in time for the seven-week run of Homages: Tributes to the Masters at the Firelands Association for the Visual Arts. "He's walking and talking," laughs Betsy Mandaren, the gallery's director. "He still bicycles around town. He still has his studio, and he's there most days. He's one of our board members and one of the sharpest ones on it, I might add." The exhibit memorializes Arnold's art-world idols like Matisse and van Gogh. "They're really wild, because I think a lot of them look like Paul," says Mandaren. "He might not appreciate me saying that, but he's put his twist into them." The collection is on display from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays, through Sunday, June 29, in the Firelands Association for the Visual Arts' South Gallery, 39 South Main Street in Oberlin. Admission is free. Call 440-774-7158.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sundays, 1-5 p.m. Starts: May 15. Continues through June 29, 2008
