Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds/Connor Kennedy/Scarlet & the Harlots

When: Thu., Nov. 7, 8 p.m. 2013

Making a splashy entrance on the soul/jam scene a few years back by way of the festie circuit, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds bring a special brand of heat to their shows. Arleigh Kincheloe, the aforementioned Sister Sparrow, jams alongside eight musicians who draw on inspirations as varied as New Orleans funk and Motown and beyond. And her voice is a powerful component of all of the above. Kincheloe takes her time pouring on the sugar in songs like “Millie Mae,” which works its way through a gentle series of riffs underneath the lyrics. Last month, the band released a nice little EP to follow up their debut. Listeners will notice that Sister Sparrow and her flock are clearly building on the sound first flaunted in 2012.
