The sound of tenor saxophonist Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet has been tagged a mix of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Frank Zappa, and Charles Mingus. Sample the Seattle seven-piece's wares, and these associations ring true. The five horns can make like the congenial chatter of a street-corner band, the contentious bark of a Mingus ensemble, or the engaging, disturbing harmonics of an early Mothers of Invention chart. Riding a cushion of Hammond organ and drums, they merge serious creative business with a footloose attitude that evokes primal jazz-punksters. Skerik, the Septet's leader, sports a résumé that includes work with Medeski Martin and Wood, Les Claypool, Mad Season, and Garage à Trois.
