Social Distortion/The Whigs/Jonny Two Bags

When: Thu., Sept. 11, 8 p.m. 2014

When Social Distortion played House of Blues two years ago, the veteran SoCal punk band showed it’s still at the top of its game. While singer-guitarist Mike Ness might have exchanged his wifebeater for a baggy suit and fedora that made him look like some kind of tattooed gangster, he still snarled with ferocity and sounded particularly good on “I Was Wrong,” the confessional tune that the band played at the opening of the show. While Social D.’s rip-roaring anti-establishment anthems went over best with the audience, the set’s highlights were the songs that showed off the group’s rockabilly roots and, of course, its terrific rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” a tune that always sends the crowd into a frenzy.
