Stephen Jacobs could have been part of N.Y.C.'s indie-hipster scene. He could've played in bands that made the cover of Spin. But instead, his group, the Dirty Sock Funtime Band, writes goofy, funny, and catchy ditties that make kids happy. And that's good enough for him. "This is the greatest job I could ever ask for," he says.

The Dirty Sock Funtime Band performs at Tops KidsFest this weekend. The 15th annual gathering features monster trucks, bumbling clowns, circus feats, martial arts, and lots of food. Dirty Sock headlines the live music bill. "We're all about getting kids to their first rock concert," says Jacobs.

The seven-piece band combines the Red Hot Chili Peppers' white-boy funk, Funkadelic's outer-space noise, and the occasional surf guitar. Says Jacobs: "We take our silliness very seriously."
