On her “Drivin’ & Dreaming” tour, Swedish folk-singer Sofia Talvik is traveling the states in a refurbished ’94 RV. Infested with termites and covered in pink wallpaper when she found it, the rig required a lot of fixing up. Still, Talvik likes the convenience the trailer offers her. “You can just play a show and then go out to the parking lot and close the door, and you’re home. You can always sleep in your own bed.” Still, state-hopping in a mobile home does have its downsides. For one, Talvik often forgoes air-conditioning to conserve energy. But even in the throes of recent heat waves, she’s managed to stay cheery. Her disposition translates to her tour as well: Talvik considers no venue too small for a stop. “When you’re fairly unknown, it’s hard to compete with the shows going on in New York, Chicago, L.A. It’s so much more work to do the big cities, and you don’t get the same connection with the people,” she explains. Playing within arm’s reach of the audience certainly helps foster a relationship with them. Tonight, Talvik will be doing just that at the Barking Spider. The free show starts at 7:30. Talvik hopes you’ll leave thinking of her “as a person you got to know instead of just an artist you came to see."
