Something Subversive

When: Fri., Aug. 22 2014

Explore the fascinating world of American poet Elizabeth Bishop and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares in Reaching for the Moon, a film that shows at MOCA today. Presented by Sistah Sinema, this documentary follows the passionate relationship between the two and opens up conversation around what it means to be a queer woman of color. Not only will this film challenge you to explore societal norms in a time where conservatism was the rule, but its midcentury setting also provides a beautiful backdrop for art and vintage lovers alike. Local poets will read original pieces following the movie. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door, and the film starts at 6:30 p.m. (Trenholme)
