Splatter Cinema

Part Deliverance, part David Lynch mindfuck, the Belgian thriller Calvaire (The Ordeal) puts every late-night traveler's nightmare onscreen. After his van breaks down in the sticks, lounge singer Marc Stevens is forced to spend the night at a rundown inn. Soon he discovers that his host lost his mind. And, as it turns out, the rest of the inbred village is populated by men who display a unnerving fixation on farm animals. From there, our hero must endure crucifixion, sodomy, and a heart-pounding trek through a fog-filled forest. Director Fabrice Du Welz piles on the style, even during the film's many blood-soaked torture scenes.
