Strange Changes

When: Sun., June 29, 7 p.m. 2014

Paying homage to the great well of freakout rock traditions, Strange Changes is bringing its mad circus to town this week. The band, which hails from the Boston area and channels boundless energy on the stage, dabbles in everything from jazz constructions to math rock assaults. (Mr. Bungle’s 1995 classic of insanity, Disco Volante comes to mind, and with good reason.) Take “Dinosaur Gravy,” the opening track on their debut, 2012’s I Want You. It’s a brass-driven, theatrical bastard of a number. Cleveland native and Berklee grad Tom Dowd pulls aside tattered curtains in hopes of showcasing the twisted realities that lay within and without all of us. “Salvation in the Dirt” also highlights the band’s penchant for atmospherics and dynamics. The brass section, notably, is on fire throughout the album, and they’re sure to please live and in the flesh tonight. (Sandy)
