Christoph von Dohnányi returns to conduct the Cleveland Orchestra tonight in a performance of Robert Schumann’s Symphonies Nos. 4 and 2. That’s not a typo; Schumann’s fourth symphony was composed in 1841, before his second, but a heavily revised version of this work was published a decade after its completion. Schumann composed the second symphony in 1844. Both works are full of excitingly complex, brooding and emotional music, reflective of a mad yet brilliant artist. Dohnányi recorded all four of Schumann’s symphonies during his two-decade-long directorship of the Cleveland Orchestra, so expect a masterful performance of these incredible pieces. The concert takes place tonight at 7:30 at Severance Hall and performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets start at $31.
