Summer Bummer Featuring Weatherbox/Diekmbe/Old Gray

When: Thu., July 24, 6:45 p.m. 2014

Pretty much the solo-ish project of one singer-songwriter Brian Warren, Weatherbox has reeling in dozens of musicians from the San Diego area over the years. Through it all, Warren has grown up and treated his pop-punks sensibilities with a more critical edge. His latest album, Flies in all Directions, builds on his canon, already an impressive discography that expands on the typical definitions of “punk” these days. Follow the Rattle of the Afghan Guitar, a 2011 EP, similarly showcases some of Warren’s finer chops. Opener “Secret Muslim” is an uplifting indie-sounding number (with flashes of Isaac Brock, at least on the six strings during the outro) that dabbles in a bit of political awareness. And cue up “Mountain” for the aforementioned maturity w/r/t pop-punk songwriting skills. Anyway, the whole lineup at Mahall’s Summer Bummer is just the sort of thing that’ll flip your summer script into something a bit more blissfully grayscale for a night. (Sandy)
