Swim for Your Breakfast

When: Tue., Aug. 2 2011

Instead of groggily rolling out of bed today for that frantic rush to work, why not set your alarm a little earlier and jump-start your day with a dip in Fairport Harbor? Join dozens of other early birds for a leisurely 8 a.m. swim to the breakwall and back. If the energizing .8-mile swim isn't incentive enough, there's this: A breakfast buffet of eggs, sausage, bacon, fruit, and waffles will be waiting for you on the shore. "It's a good wake-up," says event overseer Seth Begeman. "You get to see the beautiful sun coming through the clouds, bouncing off the lake; and if you're lucky you might spot an eagle or two." That sounds way better than a coffee shop full of angry caffeine addicts. Swimmers of all experience levels are welcome, and kayaks will carefully monitor the action. Plan to arrive by 7:30 a.m. at 301 Huntington Beach Dr., and anticipate staying at least an hour for breakfast. If you don't bring your own dish, a donation of $5 will suffice. The event is free, and most participants just show up; if you're the kind who likes to register in advance, go to or call 440-256-3821. — Barnes
