Take a Bike Tour of Shaker Heights

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 2 2012

If all you know of Shaker Heights comes from dodging the Van Aken Rapid, boy do we have a treat for you. Park the car, and take a bike ride through one of the region’s most beautiful cities. With its tree-lined streets, four lakes, and plentiful parkland, Shaker Heights also is home to some highly impressive housing — including the original Tudor and Georgian manses to which many modern McMansions aspire. All of which adds up to a perfect destination for bike-based gawking. To facilitate, the Shaker Historical Society is now offering bike tours of the neighborhood. Five bucks will get you a bike, helmet, map, and guide booklet outlining 12 points of interest, including the Shaker Lakes, the circa-1920 Plymouth Church, and the site of the original Shakers’ East Family Dwelling House. For $10, they’ll throw in a water bottle and a real, live guide. The tour starts and ends at the Historical Society; estimated time of completion is two leisurely hours. Guided tours are available Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. The self-guided safaris can be had any time the museum is open: 2 to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays. Reservations are a must.
