The problem with today's package tours, specifically Ozzfest 2000 and the Vans Warped Tour, is that the novelty of melding different styles has simply worn off. So if you're a steadfast metal fan who wants to continuously mosh, there's no better headbanging bargain than the inaugural Tattoo the Earth Tour. Featuring a slew of Ozzfest second-stage metal bands (Slipknot and Puya) and world-class tattoo artists (Paul Booth, Hanky Panky, and Sean Vasquez), this unique festival is all about celebrating the fast and furious heavy metal lifestyle. Musically, the tour offers a relentless display of unadulterated metal with bands that don't necessarily transcend the genre as much as further its cause. This includes grating hardcore (Sevendust) and old-school speed metal (Slayer). Part of the lure of this ink 'n' metal fest is seeing what new bands bring to the table. Look for the hip-hop turned punk stylings of (Hed)pe, the harsh brutality of Cold, and the abrasive Latin rock of Puya for something fresh, and ignore Nashville Pussy's rock clichés and Slipknot's tiresome stage antics. But that's the beauty of the event. When bored, there's plenty of time to get a barbed wire chiseled on your arm or O-z-z-y sketched on your knuckles.
