The Afghan Whigs/Joseph Arthur

When: Tue., Sept. 9, 8 p.m. 2014

When the Afghan Whigs, the Cincinnati alternative rock band that reunited a few years ago, played Lollapalooza in 2012, the setting didn’t do anything to enhance the band’s music. Dark and edgy (and devoid of any significant hooks), this is the kind of stuff best suited to dimly lit (preferably smoky) clubs. The Beachland Ballroom provided a much more appropriate venue for the band, which brought its own LED lights and even puffed some smoke onto the stage as it delivered a compelling 90-minute concert in front of a capacity crowd. The band has apparently caught a good second wind from that tour — earlier this year it delivered a terrific new studio album. Expect to hear new tracks alongside oldies such as “Debonair” and “Faded.” (Niesel)
