When: Wed., July 11, 7 p.m. 2012
Fearless and outrageous, performance artist Marina Abramovic has made a career out of putting her life in danger for the sake of her art. Past shows have found her carving pentagrams into her stomach, and standing motionless while audience members were invited to have at her with glitter, guns, and knives. The documentary Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present provides a behind-the-scenes look at the artist as she puts together a 2010 retrospective of her work for the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. (As part of the show, the 63-year-old Abramovic spent more than 700 hours sitting motionless across a table from thousands of viewers in what she called “an energy dialogue.”) Intimate and intriguing, the 2012 flick is a portrait of a strong and controversial artist. It screens tonight at 7 p.m. at Gartner Auditorium. Tickets are $9 online or at the door.
