The Bellfuries/Jessica Lea Wilkes/Oldboy

When: Wed., Sept. 30, 8:30 p.m. 2015

Cleveland native Joey Simeone leads the Bellfuries, a retro-sounding act out of Austin that records for Hi-Style Records, home to roots rockers such as JD McPherson and the Del Moroccos. Produced by label owner Jimmy Sutton (JD McPherson, Pokey LaFarge), the band's new album, Workingman's Bellfuries, sounds like a blast from the past as Simeone channels Buddy Holly on the snappy opening number "Loving Arms" and then sounds a bit like Roy Orbison on the twangy ballad "Bad Seed Sown." Simeone's tender voice makes the sharply written songs really pop. (Niesel)
