The Haunted

With Shai Hulud, Bleeding Through, and Kataklysm. Sunday, June 8, at the Agora Theatre.

The Haunted has gotten a ton of respect from the metal underground. Part of that's due to their lineage, of course -- members of the band did time in such well-respected acts as Witchery and At the Gates. But a large part is due to the visceral power of the group's three albums: The Haunted, The Haunted Made Me Do It, and One Kill Wonder are all blasting thrash-metal efforts, with minimal progressive tendencies and no letup from first track to last. This is fine, but like a few other bands (Cryptopsy and Carnal Forge come readily to mind), the Haunted sometimes allows overwhelming fury to lapse into monotony. This is particularly true of One Kill Wonder, in which the headlong assault -- when taken cumulatively with the two headlong assaults that preceded it -- becomes too much of a good thing. Still, they're likely to be great live. Bands that just bash out one brutal anthem after another tend to make for better mosh pits than albums anyway.
