The Iceman Cometh

Beneath figure skating's beauty and grace lies the sport's dark side. Just ask Stephen Smith about its unpredictable demands in Disney's High School Musical: The Ice Tour, which opens this weekend at the Q. "Someone gets injured; someone gets sick; and blades fall off," says Smith, who plays jock Chad Danforth in the slippery counterpart of the blockbuster cable-TV movie. "You would never know that, once we get in front of that curtain." That mind-set also helps him deal with touring. "You don't unpack. You get in a hotel room, sleep, wake up, and do some shows," says Smith. "Then you get back on the bus, go to the next city, and do it all over again." Since its 2006 Disney Channel debut, the TV show — as well as its spin-off theatrical version — have swept the country's teen-and-tween set with its love story of a basketball star and his geeky girlfriend. The show's figure-skating sister is now feeling the love. "It's cool how the audience goes crazy," says Smith. "What I like most is being a rock star for the day." The blades hit the ice starting at 7 tonight and skate through to Monday, January 21, at Quicken Loans Arena, 1 Gateway Plaza. Tickets are $12.50-$68. Call 216-241-2121 or visit
