The Joy Formidable/Drowners/CLUBHOUSE

The Welsh trio has been a fun band to watch for the past five years or so. With the wide-eyed and passionate frontwoman Ritzy Bryan delivering powerful rock ‘n’ roll anthems against a wall of sound, The Joy Formidable remains a powerful outfit. The new album isn’t a far cry from the previous two, but there’s still something nice about reliability in this decade. Tunes like “Radio of Lips” and “Running Hands with the Night” sort of tread familiar territory (and, one might wonder, why not just pull out your copy of The Big Roar?), but they’re still full of enticing hooks and chord progressions. Onstage, at the end of the day, this band shines. (Eric Sandy)
