The Monsters/Uno Lady/Archie and the Bunkers

When: Wed., Sept. 3, 9 p.m. 2014

Formed in 1986 and having undergone quite a few lineup changes since, Switzerland’s the Monsters have evolved a bit of a cult-like status. In the years they’ve been around, they’ve managed to keep up their gritty, punkish attitude without losing any authenticity at all. This is most evident in their latest release, 2011’s Pop Up Yours. Tracks like “Blow Um Mau Mau” and “When I’m Grown Up” take on a classic punk rock sound with high-energy guitar and feverish drumming, led on by sassy, screamy vocals. “In and Out” and “Into the Void” veer more into garage territory with fast, fuzzed-out guitar. “Ce Soir” seems to be an oddball thrown into the mix with Captain Beefheart-esque vocals that wander the line between French and English in waltz-like pattern with surfy guitar strums. While it certainly deviates from the rest of the album, it fits in well, making the whole thing a pretty good listen from start to finish. Expect a night of true rocking out as these guys are expected to put on a pretty good show. (Trenholme)
