We first caught the Rapture in early 2000, on what turned out to be a knockout Before They Were Cool bill, supporting Hot Snakes and Burning Brides at some dive in Philly. They couldn't have been more unlistenable: The shards-of-glass guitar tone could only coexist with frontman Luke Jenner's otherworldly dolphin squeals. These vaguely enjoyable, shrill thrills were well documented on the Rapture's first two efforts, Mirror and Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks, the latter a cacophonic nightmare with only the title track's smooth disco flow a harbinger of things to come.
The "Jealous Lovers" phenomenon makes sense -- the Rapture fused sultry house synth to the birdcage, augmenting the band's accessibility tenfold -- but it isn't too much of a structural departure. "Lovers" is no linear narrative, depicting sordid goings-on in said house/brothel/whatever -- just a loopy excuse for Jenner to screech the title ad infinitum, sometimes punctuating it with "Shake dowwwwwwn!" New cuts such as "Sister Savior" and "Killing" flaunt even nastier, sexier house beats. Hype justified. Pucker up.
