The Revivalists/Sassafraz/Burning River Ramblers

When: Tue., Nov. 11, 8:30 p.m. 2014

Spinning northward from the top-tier music scene in New Orleans, The Revivalists blend a number of genres -- none of which immediately call to mind their bayou beginnings. This year’s release, City of Sound, sees the septet firing away on all polyrhythmic cylinders. It’s an exciting album, accentuated at every ebb with fine brass notes, staccato guitar melodies, Dave Shaw’s soulful vocals, Andrew Campanelli’s hallucinogenic percussion work and so much more. The transition from album opener “When I’m Able” to “When I Die” showcases at least one dramatic contrast in styles. The latter dabbles in the swampy, bass-driven NOLA soul sound. Later on, “Navigate Below” shows a more anthemic side to the band. You can count on the band’s vivacious in-studio vibe translating well to the stage tonight. Come check it out. (Sandy)
