Now essentially an annual Mahall’s tradition, the Soul Rebels return to the legendary Lakewood bowling alley tonight for an evening of fiery New Orleans funk. From their down-home roots of the deep South to international audiences of all ilk, the cats that make up Soul Rebels have cast their vibes across a wide swath of this planet. "The audiences that we experience across the world are so inviting to the grassroots New Orleans funk sound," drummer Lumar LeBlanc told Scene in 2013. "I think we're opening the ears and eyes of people all over the world." The thing about the Soul Rebels is that they channel traditional NOLA-inspired music through the whole gamut of contemporary pop stylings. As the band was coming together in the 90s, they took heat for not being cut from the traditional brass-clad cloth. Bucking the party line has seemed to be a good move for the band - and for the enthusiastic crowds that fill out their shows. (Sandy)
