  • Brasa Grill

    1300 W. 9th St. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-575-0699

If anyone is worried about the state of the economy, you would never know it by the festive crowd of well-dressed hipsters mixing it up inside Ohio's first Brazilian churrascaria. The house specialty is an endless parade of fresh-off-the-grill meats, carved tableside by a crew of peripatetic "gauchos." A meticulously maintained buffet offers salads and more, while elegant, a la carte desserts are worth saving room for.

  • Chez Francois

555 Main St., Vermilion Western Suburbs

    440-967-0630

One of the region's few remaining "special occasion" spots, Chez Francois offers a clubby waterfront setting, formal service, a menu of French classics, and a formidable wine list.

  • Club Isabella

    2175 Cornell Rd. East Side/University Circle/Little Italy

    216-229-1111

This new incarnation of Club Isabella sparkles in every way, from the gorgeous setting to the original and eclectic cuisine from chef-owner Fabio Mota. Among the seafood-centric options: buttery frogs legs, fried sweet and spicy cuttlefish, crab-rich pasta, monkfish in smoky bacon-studded cream sauce, and scallops with braised pork belly.
  • Diamond Grille

    77 W. Market St. Akron/Summit County

    330-253-0041

It's easy to imagine a gaggle of heavy-set, cigar-chomping underworld figures hunkered over dry martinis and enormous steaks at this downtown Akron institution, but even today's suburbanite will enjoy the juicy steaks, chops, and seafood that make up Diamond Grille's simple, timeless menu.
  • Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar

28869 Chagrin Blvd., Woodmere Eastern Suburbs

    216-896-9000

Dark, handsome and predictably pricey, this upscale steakhouse (part of a California-based chain) does the expected fine job with slabs of USDA Prime beef, as well as turning out some clever reimaginings of standard appetizers, side dishes and desserts. Solid wine list, with more than 100 wines available by the glass.
  • Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse

4073 Medina Rd., Fairlawn Akron/Summit County

    330-670-6303

While the atmosphere at this Hyde Park location may be a smidgen less elegant than at its Cleveland-area counterparts, the Prime dry-aged steaks here are second to none. For unforgettable flavor, pick the thick Kansas City bone-in strip. At 20 ounces, this juicy hunk of beef will almost certainly require a doggy bag, but it's one of the best steaks around.
  • Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse

    123 W. Prospect Ave. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-344-2444

This Tower City location is elegant without being stuffy, and the menu is a meat-eater's delight, with a wide selection of steaks and chops. Service is attentive and efficient. The restaurant maintains an impressive wine cellar.

  • Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse

21 Main St., Westlake Western Suburbs

    440-892-4933

Shop, then drop into this high-end, high-priced steakhouse for giant slabs of U.S.D.A. prime beef, oversized side dishes, and freshly made desserts. Or simply enjoy a drink and some apps (lobster bisque, oysters on the half-shell, or crab cakes, perhaps?) in the handsome bar or on the seasonal sidewalk patio.
  • Ken Stewart's Grille

    1970 W. Market St. Akron/Summit County

    330-867-2555

One of Akron's top restaurants, clubby Ken Stewart's serves a large menu of seafood (the house specialty), steaks, chops, chicken and pastas, as well as dozens of daily specials. Prices can be high, particularly on specials; portions are massive; service is polished; and preparation is solid, if not always au courant. Impressively large wine list.
  • Light Bistro

    2801 Bridge Ave. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-771-7130

Artful, ambitious, and urbane, this Ohio City bistro disproves the notion that Clevelanders are strictly a steak-and-taters crowd. At dinner, a tightly composed "progressive American" menu treads fearlessly from braised pork belly to eggplant flan and beyond, always focused on seasonal, sustainable, locally grown foods and always playing to an enthusiastic audience.

Sophisticated but fun-loving, beautiful but sassy, Michael and Liz Symon's Lola is the hottest spot in town, with a tightly crafted menu of contemporary American fare, rife with elegant and amusing touches. Depending on the season, offerings might include beef-cheek pierogies or smoked Berkshire pork. And leave room for dessert: Lola turns out some of the most creative sweets in town. Notable wine list.

  • Morton's of Chicago

    1600 W. 2nd St. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-621-6200

Part of an international group, Cleveland's Morton's does the expected fine job with slabs of beef. Steak choices include porterhouse, filet mignon, and New York strip; prime rib, lamb, chicken, and seafood also put in appearances. Atmosphere is comfortingly retro, with dim lighting, cozy banquettes, and Ol' Blue Eyes singing in the background.
  • Red the Steakhouse

    216-831-2252

Luscious slabs of beef and creative, indulgent salads, sides and desserts make this modern American steakhouse a prime location for well-heeled meat-eaters. A well-organized wine list, gracious service and contemporary rustic decor with a Napa-like sophistication complete the region’s best steakhouse.

  • Ristorante Giovanni's

25550 Chagrin Blvd., Beachwood Eastern Suburbs

    216-831-8625

One of the last remaining grande dames of the region’s formal dining scene, this elegant Italian restaurant offers impeccable appointments, attentive service and a luxurious menu of steaks, veal chops, seafood and pasta. Yes, it is expensive. But the chance to put on a suit and feel like a grown-up? Priceless.

  • Strip, a Steak House

36840 Detroit Rd., Avon Western Suburbs

    440-934-9900

Housed in a 160-year-old Pennsylvania Dutch barn, this steak house is anything but old-fashioned. Owner Ron Larson spiffed up the interior in ways that will pleasantly surprise diners expecting doilies and drapes. The two-story barn features a first-floor lounge with open kitchen and a spacious loft dining room. First-rate steaks and chops share the menu with less conventional steakhouse fare, like smoked chicken, pasta Bolognese and horseradish-crusted grouper.
  • The Wine Bar at Solaire

111 First St., Hudson Akron/Summit County

    330-650-9095

Don't let the "wine bar" designation fool you: This second-floor boîte in the First and Main shopping district (above Solaire spa) is really a small but elegantly appointed restaurant, serving a generally well-executed menu of contemporary French and Mediterranean cuisine.
  • Wood Fire Grille

32858 Walker Rd., Avon Lake Western Suburbs

    440-653-9376

The draw here, as the name implies, is wood-fired food. Steaks, chops and seafood are grilled over a hardwood fire, imparting a smoky richness that compliments the meat. In addition to those steaks, the menu offers straightforward pasta dishes and the expected line-up of time-tested starters like mussels, calamari, artichoke dip, and crab cakes.
  • XO Prime Steakhouse

    500 W. St. Clair Ave. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-861-1919

Zdenko Zovkic has given the usual staid steakhouse scene a smart, contemporary twist, turning this high-profile restaurant into a svelte, sexy destination. While the steaks, all USDA prime, are the real stars, the lengthy menu goes well beyond to include luxurious fish and seafood alternatives. Meantime, seats in XO's uncluttered lounge are prime space for sampling the neighborhood's urbane vibe.
