Throwing Punches

When: Thu., Nov. 21 2013

Japanese artist Ushio Shinohara, an eccentric 80-year-old who paints by punching canvases with paint-covered boxing gloves, is the subject of Cutie and the Boxer, a documentary film by director Zachary Heinzerling. The movie focuses on Shinohara's private life — he's been married to fellow artist Noriko for 40 years — and exposes the tense arguments that the two have on a regular basis. An illustrator, Noriko creates Cutie, a character who learns to tame her often-abusive companion. Shinohara's colorful artwork gets plenty of screen time too and we see the physicality involved in painting giant canvases. The film screens tonight at 6:45 and Sunday night at 6:30 at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. Tickets are $9. (Niesel)
