Thurston Moore & John Moloney/Future Islands/Dope Body/Talk Normal

When: Mon., Nov. 19, 8 p.m. 2012

Now 54, singer-guitarist Thurston Moore could be considered one of punk rock’s elder statesmen. With New York’s Sonic Youth, which he formed in 1981, he set a template for bands interested in experimenting with and sculpting noise. Albums such as 1987’s Sister and 1988’s Daydream Nation certainly struck a chord with disenchanted youth, and Moore’s guitar theatrics were often imitated as the band eventually had an alt-rock hit and became Lollapalooza headliners. The group disbanded last year, but not without leaving a significant legacy. As he’s aged, Moore has embraced music that goes even further outside of the realm of what is generally considered punk or post-punk. For this show, he’s paired up with drummer John Moloney, who backs him in the side project Chelsea Light Moving, so expect to hear at least a few tracks from that band’s catalogue. (Jeff Niesel)
