Seasonal Special Happenings

Tornado Alley

When: Sun., March 20 2011

Just in time for the annual onset of twister season, Tornado Alley roars into the Omnimax Theater at the Great Lakes Science Center, complete with thrills, chills, and scary bits worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster. Filmmaker and professional storm chaser Sean Casey and his crew of scientists shot their terrifying footage from inside a fleet of 14,000-pound armored vehicles specially designed to withstand a tornado's destructive powers. "It's like being sandblasted," Casey said in a 2009 interview, describing the experience of being inside the funnel. "It's like being in a plane experiencing turbulence but with a real high frequency, a real high pitch." Begun in 2003, the film made its national debut on March 18 and will be screened at the Science Center at least through Labor Day. Today's showings are at noon, 2, and 4 p.m. Adult admission is $9.95 (and less for students, seniors, and youth); get your tix at the Science Center box office or online at greatscience.com. The GLSC is at 601 Erieside Ave.; call 216-694-2000 for more information. — Cicora
