Tribal Seeds/Fortunate Youth/Hirie

When: Sun., Oct. 20, 8:30 p.m. 2013

Hoisting the banner of roots-rock reggae aloft, SoCal’s Tribal Seeds blend the genres with aplomb. They’ve cut a handful of LPs and EPs, giving fans a well-rounded sampling of what they do best. While they’re not revolutionizing the field by any means, Tribal Seeds throw down concise albums that make terrific listening experiences. Take 2009’s The Harvest. Singer Steven Rene Jacobo weaves versatile lyrics around a steady backbeat accented by Ryan “Gonzo” Gonzalez’s heady lead work. Songs like “Warning” also showcase the band’s ability to flip on the electronics and throw a curveball into the roots reggae pool. “Herby,” likewise, blurs the lines some more and brings the traditions of reggae into a contemporary sphere. There’s also the token “light up ya ganja” riff on that one, so we know we’re remaining thankfully close to the source. (Sandy)
