Umphrey's McGee

When: Wed., Oct. 22, 7:30 p.m. 2014

It’s become something of a tradition for Cleveland jam heads: Umphrey’s in October. Each year brings divine improvisational feats and inspiring setlists. Ocotober 2013 featured “40s Theme” in the opening slot (a personal favorite) and a second set-closing “Plunger” > “No Comment” > “Plunger,” which was just incredible. Earlier this year, the band released Similar Skin, which tones down the heaviness they threw down on Death by Stereo a few years prior. “No Diablo,” among the best songs on the album, is an atypical, almost 1970s-flavored pop tune tinged with Jake Cinninger’s classic Umphrey’s palm-muting rhythms and Joel Cummins’ upbeat piano lines. The band has always been great at pure songwriting, despite their penchant for improvisation snagging the headlines most often. This new album just sort of shows off the whole package. And so will tonight’s show. (Sandy)
