Waves of Mutilation

The best moments of LoudQUIETloud: A Film About the Pixies come when the alt-rock heroes are onstage. The documentary covers the band's 2004 reunion tour — from first-day rehearsals to the final string of sold-out shows. Along the way, viewers get a good idea why the group split up so spitefully in 1992: No communication. While the film details the members' individual pursuits over the years — Kim Deal became a rock goddess in the Breeders, drummer David Lovering became a magician — it's their collective disconnection that fuels LoudQUIETloud. As Black Francis points out, the reason they don't talk is not because they don't like each other; it's because "it's just the kind of people we are." Indeed, there are many scenes of them sitting around in silence.
