Wayne Hancock put on a great show last night at the Grog Shop in front of a small but devoted audience. It’s been three years between studio recordings and during that time Hancock has gone through a divorce and spent time in rehab). Last night, he debuted new material based on his real life struggles and the songs stood out for their melancholy, mournful lyrics. He also played crowd favorites such as “King Viper,” “Johnny Law” and “Thunderstorms and Neon Signs” in addition to covers by Jimmy Rogers and Hank III. He took requests from the crowd, and “87 Southbound” became a raucous sing-a-long. This telling quote sums it all up: “I’m Wayne Hancock and I’m not sorry about it!!!”
