Rock & Pop, Seasonal Special Happenings

When: Thu., Sept. 4, 7:30 p.m. 2014

It’s been a quiet year for Wilco, what with Solid Sound taking a year off and Jeff Tweedy hitting the road with his new solo band (featuring his son, Spencer, on the skins). Unexpectedly, the band chose to drop in on both Columbus and Akron this week before showing up in Virginia for Lockn’ Festival. That’s a blessing for the denizens of Ohio. Wilco takes its outstanding studio repertoire and expands the songwriting in all directions onstage (see guitarist Nels Cline on “Impossible Germany,” in particular). Wilco cares deeply about the craft of good music, and to see the band perform is a thing of beauty. Also, keep an ear open aloft for some of the tunes already previewed off Tweedy’s solo album, Sukierae. The last time Wilco passed even remotely nearby was 2012’s summertime gig in Columbus, where Tweedy cheerily led the crowd in an off-kilter rendition of relative rarity “Kingpin.” (Sandy)
