A real-life bat-man headlines today’s Bat Gala at South Chagrin Reservation. And even though Rob Mies doesn’t sport a rubber costume, he does know a thing or two about daring rescues in the dark. The founder of the Organization for Bat Conservation has dedicated his life to the nocturnal flying mammals. “Bats are very important, misunderstood, and going extinct,” he says. Plenty of the winged creatures will be on hand at the fest -- including a Malaysian flying fox bat that boasts a six-foot wingspan. Participants can make crafts, sing songs around a campfire, and catch a screening of, yep, Batman. Says Cleveland Metroparks naturalist Tim Krynak: “More and more people are realizing that bats are important components in our environment.”
