Wishbone Play

Amateur athletes work off the turkey with the pigskin.

by

If you think your bones are too brittle or your head too throbbing to play in today's Turkey Bowl VI, here are Nick (John?) Teel's words of encouragement: It's only touch football. "You're just running on the grass," says Teel, who co-owns the Cleveland Plays recreational-sports outlet. "It's not like those hardcore guys who play flag football with the blocking, pushing, and digging in."Traditionally held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the bowl pits up to 20 teams of five men and three women each. Divided into five brackets, every squad plays four games. The teams with the best records in their divisions advance to the finals, and the champion earns a free slot in Cleveland Plays' nine-week winter football league. Today's late-fall weather could give the winners a clue about playing in the snow. "They're pretty sturdy folks, but it's better than sitting inside," says Teel. "This is the bi ggest party on a Saturday afternoon in Cleveland — that's for sure." First kick is at 9 this morning at Clark Field on West 11th Street in Tremont. It's free to watch and $200 per team to play. Call 216-269-5019 or visit www.clevelandplays.com.
