When: Tue., Oct. 23, 7:30 p.m. 2012

It would be hard to find someone who listens to rap that doesn’t know a song or two by Wiz Khalifa. One of the most popular names in today’s scene, Khalifa has collaborated with Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg and Curren$y, and has toured with Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan, and Yelawolf. His 2011 album Rolling Papers debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and won the Best New Artist award at the 2011 BET Awards. Although Khalifa was born in North Dakota and lived in Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan, his most popular song, “Black and Yellow,” is about the city Cleveland can’t stand: Pittsburgh. “Black and Yellow” peaked at #1 on the Billboard Top 100 charts, and even though Browns fans are probably chagrined, chances are many of them have the song on their iPods. Khalifa doesn’t show any sign of slowing down. He’s started his own label, Taylor Gang Records, and is getting ready to release his second studio album, O.N.I.F.C. He already released his first single off the album, “Work Hard, Play Hard,” earlier this year. It’s your typical pop-rap song, with a catchy melody but unimaginative lyrics that aren’t in the least bit profound. Lyrics like “Make sure you do whatever it is that you gotta do/that’s your job” are blatantly trite. You won’t confuse this guy with great hip-hop lyricists such as Nas or Jay-Z. (Sam Mendez)
