Young the Giant/Vance Joy

When: Wed., March 12, 8:30 p.m. 2014

You’ve undoubtedly heard Young The Giant’s first big hit “Cough Syrup,” a smoothly bittersweet anthem about having a nervous breakdown and then medicating with cough syrup. That song was written way before the release of the band’s eponymous self-titled album, when the guys were a band called the Jakes. It’s tame compared to the bombastic heavy hitting guitar riffs of their next single “My Body.” Young The Giant has this clean, exciting lackadaisical style highlighted by their jumpy guitar lines and powerful grooves. “It’s About Time,” the lead single from their latest release Mind Over Matter, is an aggressive departure from their previous album. They intersperse the hard stuff with some sincere vocal solos and wormy synth leads adding depth to their sound. The song “Crystalized” is closer to their established asthetic, encapsulating the “Orange County sound” the band claims to have. This band has definitely evolved its sound on Mind Over Matter, so expect to hear some new stuff at House of Blues tonight. Australian folk-pop artist Vance Joy opens the show. (Gonzalez)
