Rock & Pop, Seasonal Special Happenings

When: Sun., Dec. 29, 9 p.m. 2013

If there's one thing that's OK for the Germans to invade, it's the electronic music world. Karlheinz Stockhausen manipulated new worlds in the '60s; Kraftwerk took us on the Audobahn in the '70s; and Zedd brings a simple yet intelligent style to electro house. After releasing a series of EPs, Zedd released his first full-length album, Clarity, earlier this year. The album offers a host of unexpected elements. Obviously influenced by his classical music training as child, Clarity blends gritty synths with beautiful melodic lines. Dashing expectations of a relentless dance record, it opens with "Hourglass," a beautiful, wistful tune with yearning female vocals and tender harmonies that transitions to a dancy pop track. Busting through like a tidal wave, "Shave It Up" kicks the album into full force with intense basslines and heavy-as-thunder drums. Further along on the album, tracks like "Codec" and "Stache" keep it moving with splashy drums and dirty synth lines. Though still early in his electronic career, Zedd places himself in the forefront of the electro house scene with this strong release. (Stoops)
