6/6: Dave Brubeck at PlayhouseSquare

by

This year marks the 50th anniversary of pianist Dave Brubeck’s most famous album, Time Out, which includes the jazz classic “Take Five.” This performance, along with Brubeck’s authorship of the often-covered standard “In Your Own Sweet Way,” makes him one of the most highly regarded white musicians in jazz history. Despite a recent viral infection and hospital stay, the 88-year-old is celebrating this landmark just like he’s celebrated every other achievement in his decades-long career: by touring. He’s traversed the globe for decades, even co-writing a musical, The Real Ambassadors, based on his experiences touring Europe on behalf of the U.S. State Department in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He’s also composed orchestral works and ballet scores, though his small-group performances continue to blend the unexpected time signatures and impeccable swing that are his trademarks. The show starts at 8 p.m. at the Allen Theatre (1501 Euclid Ave., 216.241.6000). Tickets: $40-$65. — Phil Freeman
