7/21: Adrian Belew at Grog Shop

Adrian Belew’s wildly innovative guitar work has enhanced some of the most significant projects by King Crimson, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson and Tori Amos. Belew’s first solo album, 1982’s Lone Rhino, was an unearthly but accessible Beatles-grade piece of guitar-pop. As solo artist and core member of Cincinnati’s the Bears, Belew recorded a string of both avant-garde and pop-rock gems. A new album called e comes out soon. Belew’s trademark sonic playfulness recently got a youthful boost, courtesy of the brother-sister rhythm section of Julie and Eric Slick, both School of Rock alum. Belew’s godlike guitar genius — combined with his cozy, personable demeanor and gushingly enthusiastic fans — adds up to live shows not to be missed. The Belew/Slick power trio plays the Grog Shop (2785 Euclid Heights Blvd., Cleveland Hts., 216.321.5588) at 8 p.m. Tickets: $20 advance, $23 day of show. — Michael David Toth
