You didn’t really want to get right home after work, did you? The dog can hold it, the cat will forgive you for the late dinner (maybe by Christmas). So grab your co-workers and head over to West 9th Street for the first Sparx Thursday Night Live After-Work Block Party, part of the seventh season of Sparx free downtown summer events. The street will be closed to cars between St. Clair and Johnson Ct. from 5-9 p.m. for live music by roots-rock band Lost State of Franklin, a cornhole tournament, a sweepstakes to win a downtown apartment for a year and, after dark, a movie on a large inflatable screen (this week it’s The Dark Knight). Many bars and restaurants on that stretch of West 9th will offer uniform happy-hour pricing: $2 beers, $3 wine and $4 mixed drinks. Future Thursday block parties on West 9th take place July 30, August 6 and August 13. Go to cleveland.com/sparx or call the Downtown Cleveland Alliance at 216.736.7799 for more info. — Anastasia Pantsios
