9/12: Monarch Magic at North Chagrin Nature Center

The Cleveland Metroparks have provided several opportunities over the summer to get up close and personal with creepy things like bugs and bats. This weekend, they’re featuring a creature that will make even the most delicate member of your family go “oooh” instead of “ick!” The Monarch butterfly will be the center of attention at the North Chagrin Nature Center (Sunset Lane entrance to North Chagrin Metroparks Reservation, off SOM Center Rd., 440.473.3370) during today’s Monarch Magic, which happens from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. University of Minnesota researcher and Monarch maven Dr. Karen Oberhauser will talk about “Milkweed, Monarchs and More” at noon, 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. There’ll also be opportunities for butterfly banding, crafts and games centered on butterflies, hikes, and a net tent with live caterpillars and caterpillars for observation. Plus, there’ll be screenings of movies about the Monarchs at 1, 2 and 4 p.m. Best of all, it’s free. — Anastasia Pantsios
