11/18: Wicked at PlayhouseSquare

by

In The Wizard of Oz, good witch Glinda asks the crash-landed Dorothy, “Are you a good witch or a bad witch?” In Wicked, the musicalization of Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name, things aren’t as simple. It tells the story of two college classmates born in Oz. Even though the green-skinned co-ed is smart, sparky and pretty, her less-interesting friend is the one who becomes, as one song goes, “Popular.” No wonder she’s pissed. The musical features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. The original Broadway production won a Grammy and three Tony awards. Wicked’s second national tour launches its Cleveland run at 8 tonight at PlayhouseSquare's State Theatre (1519 Euclid Ave., 216.241.6000). Performances run through December 13. Tickets: $34.50-$130. — Michael Gill
