3/20: Jimi Izrael at Mac's Backs

Authors often urge readers to not merely settle. In The Denzel Principle, Shaker Heights native Jimi Izrael claims that when standards are set so high by impossible Hollywood ideals, choosing a partner who doesn’t measure up isn’t really settling. It’s reality. Izrael positions Denzel Washington as the ideal man, especially in the eyes of his adoring black female audience. The book introduces a concept that Izrael defines as “the delusion of finding the perfect man, which causes black women’s standards to be so high as to cause them to be disaffected, disappointed or deceived.” The Denzel Principle is part memoir, part cultural criticism that applies to men and woman of all races. Izrael will talk about his book and sign copies at 7 p.m. at Mac’s Backs Books (1820 Coventry Rd., Cleveland Hts., 216.321.2665). Admission is free. — Michael Gill
