4/11: Cleveland Jazz Orchestra at Fairmount Temple

by

Singer Helen Welch first hooked up with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra when she was looking for a big band to support her 2006 debut album. She’s performed with the group a half-dozen times since then. Welch joins the orchestra today for Swingin’ at the Temple, a program featuring Jewish composers directed by trombonist Paul Ferguson. The first half of the concert features songs by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Irving Berlin, as well as a medley arranged by Ferguson that appeared on Welch’s CD. The second half is an all-Gershwin extravaganza, featuring “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” “The Man I Love” and another medley, which Welch describes as “a whole stack of tunes all sewn together beautifully by Mr. Ferguson.” CJO’s artistic director trumpeter Sean Jones will also be featured. Showtime is 4 p.m. at Fairmount Temple Auditorium (23737 Fairmount Blvd., Beachwood, 440.942.9525). Tickets: $20. — Michael Gill
