Before Gerald Levert died last November, he went into his Cleveland studio and recorded some songs with his dad, O’Jay Eddie Levert. Next month, those recordings will be released as Something to Talk About
. It’s their second album together. The first – 1995’s Father & Son
– was a hit with fans of loverman soul music.
Gerald’s last album, In My Songs
, was released the day before Valentine’s Day this year. The marketing paid off: The CD debuted at No. 1 on the R&B charts. Something to Talk About
is due the week before Father’s Day, presumably to cash in with fathers and sons who bond over loverman soul.
Gerald was quite prolific last year, recording dozens of songs – including Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About,” which serves as the title tune of the new duet album -- by himself and with his dad for various projects. His heart gave out on November 10. An autopsy revealed about 4,376 different kinds of prescription and over-the-counter drugs in him. --Michael Gallucci
