The dudes at Last Call Cleveland, a local comedy crew, write a lot of very smart, very funny sketches for the stage and screen.
Other times, they go into full fucking-around mode, which results in videos like the above, wherein they more or less put hats on cats and sing about it. It’s sort of funny, but it’s not remotely the most incendiary thing the group has done – this, after all, is a group that performs a “Racist Barbershop Quartet” and severalothersongs that aren’t so nice to the ladies.
But, as Scene proved a while back with this story about people eating horsemeat, animals tend make folks go nutso. The cat video has gotten more views – 73,000 -- on Last Call’s YouTube page than any of their much funnier videos. And it’s received hundreds of comments. They range from accusations of animal cruelty to sympathy (“feel sorry for the drummer. another reason not to use lead paint”) to brilliant observations such as, “Vaya una puta mierda de canción y vaya humillación para los pobres animales, a gente así habria que mandarlos a la carcel.”
Well put, amigo. Well put.
The video also caused a small uproar among local actors. The moderator of Northeast Ohio Performance Arts List, on online group for actors, is apparently unaware that cats are evil. According to Mike Polk, Last Call’s general, NEOPAL’s moderator sent out an angry message to the group. His baseless argument was that “animal cruelty is never funny.”
Of course, this argument is quite wrong, as proved night after night on reruns of America’s Funniest Home Videos. But that doesn’t mean that “Kitty Hats” is actually funny. That’s for you to decide. As for me, I’m siding with the YouTube commenter who so thoughtfully declared, “Nothing better than kitties in hats.”
Nothing better indeed. – Joe P. Tone
