There's No Evidence that Lincoln was into Cockfighting

I realize it's hard to get solid facts when talking to cockfighters, but I thought I'd point out to you they love to claim our founding fathers were cockfighters ["Chicken Wars," July 4]. None of this has been established. You stated that Lincoln kept fighting cocks. This has never even been alleged in my 18 years working on this issue. A historian at his library told us that she found no Lincoln involvement with cockfighting. The Humane Society of the United States has copies of letters regarding presidential involvement, including Lincoln, and I'm sure they'd be happy to send them to you. By the way, I organized the ballot campaigns that allowed the voters of Arizona and Oklahoma to overwhelmingly ban cockfighting in those states. Most people were quite surprised to learn it was even going on in this day and age. Jamie Massey Tucson
