As detailed in a story published this week, "The Wild, Wild West Bank," hip-hop nightclub Mirage on the Water is currently being sued by Cleveland City Council, which hopes to strip the club of its liquor license.
The owner of Downtown Self Storage, located a block from Mirage, has helped the cause by capturing footage from his building’s roof or through a third-floor window. Over two months this summer, he captured various scenes, some more chaotic than others, going down on his neighboring streets, usually around 3 a.m. on nights the club was open. To outspoken business owners and residents of the Flats, it’s clear: this is Mirage emptying its rowdy clientèle when it closes. Mirage owner Dean Salivaris claims otherwise, crying racism and wondering why the police aren't policing.
We’ve posted three of the videos here. (Click More to keep reading).
1. First, the backdrop — sound is needed to appreciate this one. The camera’s focus is on the busy intersection of Center and Hemlock. It’s 3 a.m., and Mirage just closed; that medley of twelve rap songs you hear is blasting from car stereos. The distinctive chimes of “Crank Dat” can be clearly made out. While we’re a rabidly pro-Soulja Boy publication, it should be noted that this is the sound picked up from a handheld video camera, a block away and three stories up (read: it’s loud).
The next two videos are pretty self-explanatory: a lively debate (“We in the fuckin’ hood, we do this for money, bitch! Fuck Uptown!”) takes place on Hemlock Street, right below the storage facility. Note: Toward the end of this video, “Crank Dat” can be heard again, from a passing car. Souldja Boy is one rich bastard.
The next video's taken a few minutes later, and shows one of the guys throwing a brick through his nemesis' car window. As the car speeds off, the gold-medal brick-thrower yells, “Bitch!”, and proudly stalks back to his own car, silently praising himself for a job well done.
